In fact, Laos has three distinct seasons. There is definitely a best time of year to visit the country. Plan your trip around the weather.

Hot Season

Summer; March-June

The hottest part of the year is in April and May. This is when Pi Mai, the annual traditional Lao new year takes place.

During the summer, temperatures are HOT! The sky is generally clear and brightly sunny with very hot and humid daily weather.

Temperatures during the summer in Luang Prabang average around 27-30 degrees C.

Rainy Season


Monsoon Season; July-October

During the appropriately-named rainy season, it storms nearly every day. Be prepared for some flooding! The storms come on suddenly and strongly, sometimes ending quickly, other times lasting all day.

During the rainy season, temperatures are a bit cooler, averaging around 25-28 degrees C, although the weather is very humid during this time.

Dry Season


Winter; November-February

The winter is quite pleasant, and is definitely the nicest time of year to visit Luang Prabang.

During the winter, the air becomes slightly cooler, around 20-25 degrees C, and much drier. Without the humidity, the weather feels much nicer than other parts of the year. The dry season is also the best time for travel, as roads should be better without the rain and mud.

When is the best time of year to visit Luang Prabang? 

If you can, try to plan your trip for the cooler, drier winter months between November and February.
